Give teachers a self-insurance option for their health care
Under current Maine law, school boards cannot offer a self-insurance option to their teachers for health insurance. At least one town has explored the savings it could realize if it had this option. Their conclusion was a savings of $300,000 just for their school district while offering comparable benefits. If applied statewide, the savings could be more than $30,000,000. All it takes is an amendment to the law to give towns, taxpayers and teachers this cost-saving option. Please take a minute right now to write members of the Legislature about this great opportunity. It could save teaching positions and maintain quality education in your community.
